Written by Keene State College student Julia Slight and Historical Society of Cheshire County director of education Jennifer Carroll, 2024
Twenty-year old Alonzo Hale appeared as a laborer on a farm in Stoddard, NH, in the 1850 census. The historical record indicates that he was “mulatto”, having been born in NH. While in Stoddard, Hale resided within the home of his white employers, Abner and Nancy Knowlton. Also in the household were the Knowlton children, two other white farmers in their 20s, two white carpenters in their 20s, and a 19-year old white female cook.
There’s no other historical documentation to indicate that Alonzo Hale resided in Stoddard long. An Alonzo Hale appears in other towns around New Hampshire but no sources have been recovered to link Stoddard’s resident to the other Alonzo Hales.
