John Knun Hazard
Winchester, NH
In 1930, 33-year old John N. Hazard lived with his family in a rented home on Main Street in Ashuelot, NH– an unincorporated community in the town of Winchester. They had recently moved to the area from Woodstock, Vermont. The Hazard family had lived in the Woodstock area for at least 40 years prior to their move to New Hampshire.
John Hazard worked in southwest NH doing general labor while his 26-year old wife Florence (Goodell), a caucasian by race, raised the children at home– 9 year old Lillian and 5 year old John N. Hazard. Also at home was John’s mother Amanda (53), his sister Rachel (24), and his brother Frederick (21). Frederick was a general laborer and Rachel worked as a domestic servant for a private family in the region.
In May 1936, John Sr.’s daughter Lillian Mabel Hazard married a caucasian male named Paul Linwood-Starbird who was recently divorced. Lillian was 15 years old and under age, needing approval by a judge to get married. Unfortunately, Lillian passed away during childbirth in 1938 at the age of 17 years. The baby died days later.
During the 1930s and 1940s, John Hazard worked with the highway department for the State of New Hampshire. John Jr. would follow in his footsteps working in the transportation field as well; he worked as a chauffeur, bus driver, taxi driver, truck driver, and tractor driver at various points in his career.
John Hazard Sr.’s World War II draft registration card provides some details about his appearance. He was 5’9” tall, weighing 190 pounds, with brown eyes, gray hair and a dark complexion. His son John Jr. had moved out of New Hampshire to reside in Rutland, VT, when the war broke out. He served as a private in the army during World War II.
Following the war, John Hazard, Jr. married Georgette Arnold in Stamford, VT, on Dec. 27, 1947. The couple would have two children: Robert J. and Joan M. Hazard and live the rest of their days in Berkshire County, MA. John Jr. worked for Dex Moore Firestone for 20 years. He died in 1992.
