Amanda Harrison (b.1855)

Swanzey, NH

Amanda Harrison was a 15 year old from Kentucky when she worked as a domestic servant for the Bartlett family in Swanzey, New Hampshire in 1870.  The 1870 census describes Harrison as ‘mulatto.’

The head of household, Capt. Sylvanious Bartlett, was 55-years old, white, and retired as a merchant at the time.  Just one year prior, he had met and married a woman twenty years his younger while on a business trip in the South.  Mary J. Cassett was a 30-year old white woman from New York who had been recently widowed in Kentucky.  Amanda Harrison may have come to live in New Hampshire based on a working relationship with Mary Cassett.

It is unclear how long Amanda Harrison remained employed by the Bartletts or how long she stayed in New Hampshire.  By 1880, the Bartlett family had moved to Court Street in Keene, NH, where Sylvanious worked as an inventor.
