Dinah Porter

Gilsum, NH

Dinah Porter of Gilsum, NH, married Peter Adams of Surry, NH, on June 30, 1778.  According to the marriage record, both Adams and Porter were free persons of color and residents of Gilsum, NH. He was also a Revolutionary War soldier.

The married life of Peter and Dinah (Porter) Adams is unknown. The couple may have remained in Cheshire County or moved away.  According to the Surry town history, written in 1925, "It may be well to state that some fifty years ago (perhaps later) there was not a "foreigner" in the town, and but one colored person, (the Indian woman, Dinah,)."  Could this be Peter’s wife, Dinah (Porter) Adams?
