Battis, Jack
Jack Battis (1796-1816)
Keene, NH
On March 18, 1816, a resident of Keene, NH, discovered the body of Jack Battis, a man of color. Evidence of his life in southwest New Hampshire is scarce aside from his death record which provides the following information:
Jack Battis (colored) d. Mar. 18, 1816, 20y. froze, found dead in the morning.”
It is logical that “Jack” is a nickname for John. The name John Battis appears more than once in the” Salem and Beverly, Massachusetts, U.S., Crew Lists and Shipping Articles, 1797-1934” on Ancestry.com. This Battis was a cook on ships going in and out of the harbor. Whether or not the John Battis from Salem, MA, ended up in Keene, NH, is unverified.
