John Evans (b.1851)

Roxbury, NH

John Evans, a 19-year old Black teenager from Virginia, worked as a farm laborer in Roxbury, New Hampshire, in the year 1870.  Evans lived at the farm where he most likely worked, the home of David W. Buckminster.

Buckminster died four years after the 1870 census. An inventory of his household was completed in order to close his estate with probate.  From that list, one can see the type of farm work John Evans may have been doing.  The farm included 42 sheep, 2 oxen, 2 horses, 6 types of cattle and 2 swarms of bees.

No historical documentation has been recovered, to date, to indicate how long he many have lived in southwest New Hampshire and where he ended up.
