Prince Gun

Gilsum, NH

Gilsum, New Hampshire, was home to Prince Gun as early as the mid-1780s.  One person of color resided in Gilsum in the 1786 NH census.  The town history book indicates that a Black man named Prince Gun had purchased a log cabin in 1789 for 35 pounds.  The US Federal census verifies that one person of color resided in Gilsum in 1790.  

It is unknown where Gun was born, how long he may have resided in town, and any information about his family.  There are no primary sources known to link the name Prince Gun to the census.
