Samuel Williams (c.1834-1919)

Westmoreland, NH

Samuel Williams lived in Cheshire County, NH, for approximately 20 years at the turn of the 20th century.  Born into slavery in Yorktown, VA around 1834, Williams is reported to have runaway and joined the Union Army during the Civil War.  Following the war, he lived in the Boston, MA, area before moving to Westmoreland, NH sometime in the 1890s. 

At the time Samuel Williams moved to Westmoreland, NH, he was about 60 years old and is reported to have worked at the Briggs homestead.  Within a few years, he owned his own farm and had British lodgers living in his household.  Around the same time, Williams began working to assist Dr. James A. Craig with his practice.  

As Williams aged, he moved into Dr. Craig’s home and continued to work as a caretaker and assistant until he became ill in July 1919.  Samuel Williams died in Nov 1919 under the care of Dr. Craig.  He’s buried in the South Village Cemetery in Westmoreland, NH.
