Fanny A. Armstead (b.1839)

Keene, NH

In 1860, at the age of 21, Fanny Armstead lived within the household of a 66-year old white woman, Keziah B. Appleton, of Keene, NH.  The census indicates that Armstrong was identified as ‘mulatto’ and that she could read and write.  She was born in Washington, DC.  No occupation is outlined on the census form but Armstrong may have been one of many domestic servants residing and working in the wealthier homes along Keene’s Main Street in the 1860s.

As head of household, 66-year old Ms. Appleton was listed as ‘gentlewoman’ with $10,000 in real estate and $20,000 in personal estate. Her home is listed as 154 ½ Main Street in Keene, connected, then, to her nephew John Elliot’s extensive estate at 154 Main Street.
