Harry Alexander (b.1832)

In 1870, at the age of 38 years old, Harry Alexander of Virginia had moved to Keene, NH, to work as a farm laborer.  He lived within the household of his employer, Thomas M. Edwards, at 18 Roxbury Street.   At the time, Edwards was President of Ashuelot National Bank and had served as a Congressman.  Edwards also operated an extensive farm on his property. It was not uncommon in the late 19th century Keene for well-to-do businessmen to have individuals of color or immigrants in their homes, working as domestic servants, cooks, or laborers.

It is unclear how Harry Alexander came to live in Cheshire County and how long he stayed.  His name is not listed in local directories, newspapers, vital records, or census records prior to 1870 or after 1870.
