Joab

Winchester, NH

Captain Josiah Willard, a white enslaver in Winchester, NH, mentioned an enslaved male of color named Joab in his last will and testament.  In it, Willard indicates that his ‘negro Joab’ should be freed upon his death or the death of his wife, whomever died last.  Also mentioned in the will was an enslaved woman named Nancy who should be freed upon Willard’s death.  The will was written on September 27, 1784 and probated in 1787 in Cheshire County, NH
