Captain Josiah Willard, a white enslaver in Winchester, NH, mentioned an enslaved woman of color named Nancy in his last will and testament. In it, Willard indicates that his ‘negro wench Nancy’ should be freed upon his death. Also mentioned in the will was an enslaved man named Joab who should be freed upon Willard’s death or the death of his wife, whomever died last. The will was written on September 27, 1784 and probated in 1787 in Cheshire County, NH.
