Freeman, Mercy H.
Mercy H. Freeman (1822-1897)
Fitzwilliam, NH
Mercy H. Freeman was born in Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire, in 1822, the daughter of Amos and Amy (Humphrey) Freeman. She may have resided in town throughout her youth, in the 1820s and 1830s, but it is also likely that she lived in Worcester County, MA, with her mother and siblings at that time. Mercy’s mother was from Barre, MA, and may have relocated there with her children, leaving Mercy’s father behind in Fitzwilliam, NH.
At the age of 21, Mercy married 57-year old Nathaniel Oliver in Hardwick, MA, on April 26, 1843. The marriage record indicates that the couple identified as “Colored.” Seven years later, the 1850 US census would confirm that Nathaniel and Mercy remained in Hardwick, MA.
In 1897, Mercy H. (Freeman) Oliver of Worcester, MA died of “old age” at the age of 75 years.
