Ash, George O. Henry

George O. Henry Ash (1902-1987)

Chesterfield, NH

Henry O. George Ash was born in Chesterfield, New Hampshire, in 1902.  Parents George and Larrissie M. (Grover) Ash had married in Chesterfield two years prior.  The family relocated to Lebanon, NH, where Henry’s sister Jennie was born in 1905.  After a few years, the Ash family moved to Winhall, VT, where Henry’s maternal family resided.  Carlton James Ash was born in Winhall in 1911.

The documentation surrounding the Ash family at the turn of the 20th century in NH and VT indicates that they were caucasian.  However, after Jennie Ash married Maurice Thompson, a person of color from New York, the entire family was listed as ‘Negro’ in the 1930 census including 28-year old Henry Ash.  They lived in Braintree, VT.  At the time, brothers Henry and Carlton worked as farm laborers while sister Jennie and their mother Larrissie kept house.  Their father George Ash had separated from their mother by the 1930s.  World War II draft registration records for the sons in the Ash family reveal that the family was of light skinned complexion.

In the 1940 census, the family, again, identified as Negro while living within the household of Maurice Thompson whose lineage was connected to the West Indies.  Census documentation indicates that Henry continued to work with his brother Cartlon doing farm labor.

Henry never married.  He lived out the rest of his life in Orange County, VT working as a laborer.  On January 9, 1987, Henry Ash died of an ulcer in Randolph, VT.
